Luxury Reimagined: Mercedes-Benz Moves Past Oversized Screens to Smarter Tech

Luxury automobiles have long been distinguished by their advanced technological features, which significantly contribute to their uniqueness. With the introduction of touchscreens and digital displays, manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz have sought to enhance their exclusivity by incorporating large display panels. Notably, the German automaker unveiled a remarkable 56-inch triple display hyperscreen in models like the Mercedes-Benz EQS. However, the company now perceives that the hyperscreen has diminished in exclusivity and is no longer regarded as a luxury attribute.

Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer of Mercedes-Benz, articulated that screens do not embody luxury. He contends that the trend of integrating numerous displays into a dashboard has become commonplace, as virtually every vehicle now features a sizable screen.

In an interview with ABC News, Wagener emphasized that with the novelty of large screens having waned, Mercedes-Benz must innovate luxury beyond the confines of the display. The company is therefore focusing on enhancing the onboard software of its vehicles. "We must create luxury beyond the screen. This is why I emphasize craftsmanship and sophistication. There is a significant focus on improving vehicle quality," Wagener stated, adding, "From a software perspective, it has not been satisfactory. When equipped with a large screen, it is essential to provide engaging content. Thus, we are developing content that is more tailored and entertaining."

While touchscreens have emerged as a prevalent trend in the passenger vehicle sector, granting consumers access to a multitude of functions with a mere touch, this fixation on screens has led to various challenges. These include the tendency of displays to attract fingerprints and the unappealing thick bezels, particularly in luxury vehicles. Additionally, oversized screens often replace physical controls, relegating many functions to the infotainment system and thereby eliminating the high-quality switchgear that many car owners prefer over touch interfaces.

Mercedes-Benz is not ditching hyper screen

Mercedes-Benz remains committed to the hyperscreen, even as large digital displays become more commonplace in the luxury car market. In 2026, the S-Class will receive a significant mid-cycle facelift, which will include a substantial upgrade. This model is anticipated to adopt the triple-screen configuration seen in the EQS. While the existing version features a prominent central display, the luxury automaker aims to synchronize its premier combustion vehicle with its leading electric model.
