High-end electric vehicles priced at ₹30 lakh or more will incur additional costs in Maharashtra starting April 2025. The Maharashtra government has declared that these vehicles will be subject to a six percent tax, as outlined in the state budget. Consequently, individuals looking to purchase high-end electric vehicles in the state will face increased expenses from April 2025, due to the imposition of this tax on vehicles exceeding the ₹30 lakh threshold. Notably, there is currently no motor vehicle tax applied to electric vehicles in Maharashtra.
This development may lead to a surge in sales of high-end electric vehicles during the remaining days of March 2025, while it could create challenges for prospective buyers aiming to acquire a premium electric vehicle after the tax implementation. Concerns regarding potential declines in sales in the upcoming months are anticipated, particularly as demand for high-end electric vehicles continues to grow nationwide.
Conversely, the introduction of this tax on high-end electric vehicles is expected to enhance the state's financial resources. The anticipated tax increase is projected to contribute an additional ₹320 crore to the state government's revenue in the forthcoming fiscal year.
In addition to the tax on premium electric vehicles
The Maharashtra state budget has indicated that private four-wheelers powered by CNG and LPG will also face an extra one percent tax starting April 2025. Currently, the Motor Vehicle Tax for CNG and LPG vehicles in the state ranges from seven percent to nine percent.
With this proposed one per cent hike, he tax will range between eight to 10 per cent for the private four-wheelers with CNG or LPG powertrain. In its budget announcement, the state government has increased the maximum threshold for the Motor Vehicle Tax from ₹20 lakh to ₹30 lakh. It is expected that the move will generate over ₹170 crore revenue to the state.
