Living with Tata Curvv EV: Pros and Cons of the Coupe SUV Explained
3 days ago | 5 Views
Tata Motors continues to assert its position as a significant player in India's electric vehicle (EV) sector, with models like the Nexon EV and Tiago EV performing admirably, while the Punch EV has also garnered interest. However, the largest offering in terms of size and battery capacity has experienced mixed results. The Tata Curvv EV stands as the flagship electric vehicle from the Indian automaker, and although launching a coupe-styled SUV was a bold move, the Curvv EV arrived with high expectations. Does it meet them?
Over several days, we conducted practical evaluations of the Curvv EV in Delhi and its surrounding areas to determine whether it fulfills its promises and justifies its price range of ₹17.50 lakh to ₹22 lakh (ex-showroom). So, does it?
What we liked about Curvv EV
- The coupe design certainly elicits mixed reactions; however, the Curvv, whether in its internal combustion engine or electric vehicle variant, is not only distinctive but also quite fashionable. Online memes have drawn comparisons between the rear of this model and that of the Lamborghini Urus, which is a favorable comparison. The aerodynamic alloy wheels, LED lighting, and elevated ground clearance contribute to its robust appearance, even when stationary.
What we didn't like about Curvv EV
- The Curvv may appear large from the outside, but it lacks spaciousness. The rear seating area is cramped, making it uncomfortable for three adults. Legroom behind the front seats can be limited if the driver and front passenger choose to extend their legs, necessitating careful management of space. Furthermore, the sloping roofline reduces headroom, although this should not be an issue for individuals under six feet tall.
- Quality control remains a concern. The parking lights on the Curvv EV flickered unpredictably without any apparent cause. Whether navigating over a speed bump, gradually slowing for a traffic signal, or taking a wide turn, there seems to be a wiring issue that should have been addressed, particularly in a media test unit. Additionally, the overall fit and finish do not impress.
- Storage options in the cabin are quite limited. The center console and door designs have been carried over from the Nexon, resulting in minimal space beneath the armrest or near the air conditioning vents.
- While the cabin of the Curvv EV feels open, the rear seating area is restricted, largely due to its width being identical to that of the Nexon. Consequently, three adults in the back may find themselves uncomfortably close.
- The Tata Curvv EV supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) functionalities, enabling the powering of small appliances or charging another electric vehicle. This feature is appealing, so we attempted to connect our projector to watch the World T20 final between India and New Zealand. However, utilizing the V2L function is not as straightforward as simply plugging in; it requires a special adapter to be installed in the main charging socket of the EV. While this may not seem like a significant hurdle, it is worth noting that many competing models provide a standard 16V socket similar to those found in homes or offices.
So how does the Tata Curvv EV measure up?
The Curvv EV stands out as a commendable option in the premium all-electric vehicle market. The pricing, particularly for the variant equipped with the smaller battery pack, is competitive. It offers a smooth driving experience, an array of features, and a commendable driving range. However, it does have drawbacks, including limited rear-seat space and some quality concerns.
