The sub-compact SUV segment is currently experiencing significant growth in India. This category includes more than eight models, with the Skoda Kylaq and Kia Syros being the most recent additions. The Skoda Kylaq marks the brand's inaugural entry into the global sub-compact SUV market and has been specifically tailored for Indian consumers. Notably, the Kylaq stands out as one of the most competitively priced options within its segment, unlike other Skoda offerings in the country.

On the other hand, the Kia Syros, which follows the Sonet as the company's second entry in this segment, is marketed as a premium option. It occupies a position between the Kia Seltos and the Sonet in the brand's lineup. To set the Syros apart from the Sonet, Kia India has equipped it with the latest features and has adopted a contemporary design language.

For those considering a new sub-compact SUV but facing budget constraints, here is a brief overview of the base variants available for both the Skoda Kylaq and Kia Syros.

Skoda Kylaq: Base variant

With a starting price of ₹7.89 lakh, ex-showroom, the Skoda Kylaq's entry-level variant, Classic, offers a commendable array of features for its price point. Externally, it showcases the brand's latest design language, equipped with 16-inch steel wheels adorned with plastic covers and body-coloured outside rearview mirrors (ORVMs).

Although it lacks an infotainment system, the Kylaq Classic includes manual air conditioning, rear air conditioning vents, analogue gauges complemented by a digital multi-information display (MID), and a front centre armrest. Additionally, it provides power windows for all four doors, central locking, automatic engine start-stop functionality, a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, powered wing mirrors, fabric upholstery, and a 12V charging socket in the front.

The Skoda Kylaq Classic is powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder TSI petrol engine, which is also utilized in other vehicles from the India 2.0 project, including the Skoda Kushaq. This 1.0-litre petrol engine generates a peak power of 114 bhp and a maximum torque of 178 Nm, and it is exclusively paired with a six-speed manual transmission.

Kia Syros: Base variant

The Kia Syros lineup begins at ₹9 lakh, ex-showroom, featuring the HTK trim level. Although it is the entry-level variant, it offers a substantial array of features. Externally, the HTK model is equipped with 15-inch steel wheels adorned with black wheel covers, halogen headlights, a shark fin antenna, and silver skid plates at both the front and rear.

Inside, the cabin boasts dual-tone grey and black semi-leatherette upholstery. Notable features include a 12.30-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless phone connectivity, a reverse camera with dynamic guidance, power-adjustable mirrors and windows, rear air conditioning vents, door curtains, and four Type-C USB charging ports.

The Syros range offers both petrol and diesel engine options; however, the base trim is exclusively available with a petrol engine paired with a six-speed manual transmission. The 1.0-litre turbocharged engine, also found in the Sonet, powers the Syros, delivering 118 bhp and 172 Nm of torque.
