Kia India is poised to unveil its fourth SUV, the Syros, on December 19. This model is expected to stand out in the Indian market not only due to its distinctive design but also its unique positioning, with Kia India describing the Syros as "a new species of SUV."

Kia has been gradually disclosing various features of the Syros. The latest teaser indicates that the vehicle will include a push-button ignition, a 360-degree parking camera, a wireless charging pad, dual USB-C ports, and a panoramic sunroof. Additionally, it will offer multiple terrain modes and ambient lighting.

Among the other notable features highlighted by the company are a dual-screen configuration comprising a touchscreen infotainment system and a digital driver's display, as well as ventilated seats and ISOFIX child seat anchors. The infotainment system is expected to support wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. There is also a possibility that the Syros will incorporate an Advanced Driver Assistance System and connected car technology.

Kia Syros: Design

The Kia Syros distinguishes itself not only through its positioning but also with a design that markedly departs from the conventional aesthetics of current SUVs in its category. This model will be the inaugural SUV manufactured in India by Kia, showcasing the company's Design 2.0 philosophy as part of its Kia 2.0 strategy.

Initial sketches of the Kia Syros indicate that the SUV will possess a distinctive silhouette that sets it apart from existing market offerings. The front design draws significant inspiration from the EV9, which was introduced earlier this year. Furthermore, the sketches suggest that the Syros will incorporate an RV-inspired design reminiscent of the Carens, while still embodying essential SUV traits.

Kia India has disclosed that the Syros will feature vertical LED daytime running lights (DRLs). Furthermore, recent teasers suggest a robust front bumper and a rugged appearance for the Syros, distinguishing it from other models available from Kia in India. At the rear, the SUV will be equipped with high-mounted, wrap-around L-shaped LED taillights that are integrated with the roofline.

Kia Syros: Specs

The Kia Syros is expected to feature the same engine options as the Kia Sonet. This lineup includes a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that delivers a maximum power output of 118 bhp and a peak torque of 172 Nm, as well as a 1.5-litre diesel engine that is calibrated to produce 116 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque.

Transmission choices for these engines will encompass a 6-speed manual gearbox, a 6-speed torque converter automatic, or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Additionally, it is anticipated that a 6-speed iMT gearbox may also be available.

Kia Syros: Rivals

The Kia Sonet currently represents the company's entry-level SUV, situated within the sub-compact SUV segment. In contrast, the Kia Seltos competes in the compact SUV market alongside models such as the Hyundai Creta and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. The upcoming Kia Syros is expected to fill the gap between the Sonet and the Seltos, thereby creating a unique position in the market.

With the launch of the Syros, Kia intends to target a more affluent customer base compared to the Sonet. While the Kia Syros will retain the typical dimensions of sub-compact SUVs, it is anticipated to be outfitted with an array of premium features. It will compete with sub-4 metre SUVs, including the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Mahindra XUV 3OO, Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, and the soon-to-be-launched Skoda Kylaq.
