Are you finding that all sub-four-meter SUVs appear quite similar? Is the crowded segment creating confusion, making each model blend into the larger mass? Do you sense a deficiency in premium features among them? Introducing the Kia Syros, a sub-four-meter vehicle that seems unaware of its classification and appears indifferent to it as well.

In what may be Kia India's most significant risk to date, the Syros carves out its own niche, positioned between the Kia Sonet and Seltos SUVs. But does it truly succeed in combining the best attributes of both models? Furthermore, how effectively will its unique design and styling resonate with prospective buyers? We recently undertook a test drive of the Syros in a sincere effort to uncover the fundamental questions: what exactly is it, and why should you consider it over more traditional alternatives?

Here is the first-drive review of the all-new Kia Syros SUV:

Kia Syros: Exterior design language

The world premiere of the Kia Syros elicited a wide range of reactions from the public. Some individuals likened it to a WagonR enhanced in size and capability, while others perceived it as a more subdued version of the Defender. Additionally, there were those who described it as a smaller iteration of the EV9. Each perspective held some validity. Nevertheless, the Syros stands as a distinctive offering, featuring a design that is likely to provoke differing opinions for the foreseeable future.

Kia Syros is available in eight exterior colour options. There is, however, no dual-tone shade. There is no matte finish either. Not yet anyway.

A tall-boy design is its over-arching highlight from the outside and while it somehow manages to measure in at less than four meters, it still sports a fair bit of flair and has a very unique road presence.

Kia Syros has a ground clearance of around 190 mm which is fairly high even if not the best in the sub-four-meter SUV space.

The vertical daytime running lights (DRLs) on the front of the Kia Syros serve a dual purpose, functioning as both turn indicators and parking lights. Upon closer inspection, one can also observe the front Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) camera. In total, the vehicle is equipped with one ADAS radar, one ADAS camera, four side sensors, and four cameras that provide a 360-degree surround view.

On the side, the prominent features include large windows, flush door handles, roof rails, and side door embellishments, which become apparent only after fully appreciating the boxy design characteristic of the Syros. Additionally, the rear-quarter window is notably spacious.

The vertical DRLs on the face of Kia Syros double up as turn indicators and parking lights as well. Look closer here and one can see the front ADAS camera as well. Overall, there is one ADAS radar, one ADAS camera, four side sensors and four cams for 360-degree surround view.

A detailed examination reveals the presence of the front Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) camera. The vehicle is equipped with a total of one ADAS radar, one ADAS camera, four side sensors, and four cameras that collectively offer a comprehensive 360-degree surround view.

On the side, the vehicle showcases significant features such as expansive windows, flush door handles, roof rails, and decorative elements on the side doors, which are best appreciated when considering the distinctive boxy design of the Syros. Furthermore, the rear-quarter window is particularly large.
While the wheel arches may not be large, the 17-inch alloys on this top variant lends a fair bit of sporty character to the side visual profile of Kia Syros.
The wheel arches may not be particularly pronounced, yet the 17-inch alloy wheels featured on the top-tier variants impart a notable sporty flair to the side profile of the Kia Syros.

The Syros is equipped with 17-inch crystal-cut alloy wheels, exclusive to the highest variants, HTX and HTX+(O). In contrast, the other variants are fitted with either 16-inch crystal-cut alloys (HTK+, HTX, HTK (O) diesel) or 15-inch steel wheels with full covers (HTK and HTK (O)).

The rear design of the Syros is characterized by geometric shapes and nearly straight lines that enhance its overall appearance. The L-shaped brake lamps frame the rear glass, complemented by an integrated roof spoiler featuring a brake light at the top. Additionally, the skid plate present at the front is also incorporated into the rear design.
LED lights are reserved for the mid and top variants of Kia Syros. The lower variants will have to make do with halogen lights.

Kia Syros: Cabin highlights

The exterior design of the Syros may elicit mixed opinions; however, its interior is sure to garner unanimous praise. This model stands out as the most spacious sub-four-meter SUV currently available in the country.

The Syros shares the same length as its competitors in the sub-four-meter SUV category. Its wheelbase measures 2,550 mm, which is longer than that of many rivals, though it does not lead the segment. Additionally, it is neither the tallest nor the widest option available. Nevertheless, it offers an abundance of space for rear-seat occupants, receiving more consideration than any other manufacturer in this segment has provided to date. Features such as reclining and sliding rear seats, under-seat ventilation, and rear window shades are all included.

While a narrow parcel tray allows the rear seats to be reclined, it is the depth of the boot space in the Syros that is particularly impressive - 390 to 465 litres. Get rid of this parcel tray and several bags can be mounted one on top of another. The split-folding rear seats will open up more space as well.
The Syros boasts an impressive boot capacity ranging from 390 to 465 litres, particularly notable given the narrow parcel tray that permits the rear seats to be reclined. By removing this parcel tray, multiple bags can be stacked vertically. Furthermore, the split-folding rear seats enhance the available space.

In terms of comfort, the legroom, kneeroom, and foot space are exceptionally ample, while the under-thigh support and headroom are also satisfactory. Although there are two headrests on the rear seats, accommodating three adults during extended journeys may be a tight fit, despite the model's relatively broad dimensions. Additional amenities include dedicated air conditioning vents, two Type C charging ports, storage compartments behind the front seats, and a foldable armrest.
The HTX and HTX+(0) variants of Syros get dual-tone leatherette seats in grey (in pic). The lower and mid variants get semi-leatherette and leatherette seats, respectively, and in black or blue shades.

Kia has made considerable strides in outfitting the Syros with a comprehensive range of features at the front. The vehicle features a 30-inch screen setup, which comprises a 12.3-inch main display, a 12.3-inch digital driver display, and a 5.4-inch central screen specifically for air-conditioning controls. The display's clarity is outstanding, effectively presenting inputs from the 360-degree camera, and it demonstrates a high level of responsiveness to touch. Although some glare is noticeable, it does not significantly diminish the overall experience. The driver display provides an abundance of information and is capable of integrating data from the Outside Rear View Mirror (ORVM) cameras on both sides.

Notice that tiny little QR code on the left corner of the dashboard inside Syros? Scan it for details on all the recycled materials that have gone into making the cabin materials inside the model.

The dashboard features a horizontally elongated design that presents a sporty aesthetic. Furthermore, there are four upholstery options available for the seats, which vary according to the specific variant being considered.

The center console of the Syros includes physical buttons dedicated to air-conditioning and infotainment controls, along with two adjustable cupholders located just behind the gearbox, allowing for size customization.

Kia Syros gets both touchscreen controls and physical buttons for air-conditioning. And apart from the wireless charging pad, there are two Type C charging points and a 12V socket at the front as well.
The Kia Syros features a combination of touchscreen controls and physical buttons for the air-conditioning system. In addition to the wireless charging pad, it is equipped with two Type C charging ports and a 12V socket located at the front.

Furthermore, the Syros offers a range of options including a two-way dashcam, wireless phone charging, a panoramic sunroof (with an electric sunroof available in mid-range variants), 60-colour ambient lighting, an eight-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, and front seat ventilation.

Kia Syros: Driving dynamics

The petrol motor with DCT on the Syros helps it flaunt a claimed mileage of 17.68 kmpl. The manual gearbox versions offer a claimed mileage of 18.20 kmpl. The diesel engine offers anywhere between 17.65 kmpl and 20 kmpl (claimed).
The petrol engine equipped with a dual-clutch transmission (DCT) in the Syros boasts a claimed fuel efficiency of 17.68 kmpl. In contrast, the manual transmission variants are said to achieve a mileage of 18.20 kmpl. The diesel engine claims a fuel efficiency ranging from 17.65 kmpl to 20 kmpl.

The Syros offers a wide array of engine and transmission options. Additionally, an all-electric version is currently under consideration. For those who prefer a compact diesel engine, there is a 1.5-litre CRDi VGT engine available, which can be paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic torque converter, delivering 114 bhp and 250 Nm of torque.

Our test vehicle is equipped with a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine, complemented by the reliable seven-speed DCT. A six-speed manual transmission is also available.

On the road, the Syros demonstrates commendable agility, producing 118 bhp and 172 Nm of torque, making it one of the more dynamic performers in the sub-four-meter SUV category. This performance is not merely theoretical; in practical driving conditions, it offers a sporty driving experience, with the ability to reach triple-digit speeds swiftly. While the 'Eco' and 'Normal' drive modes are typically utilized for everyday driving, the 'Sports' mode enhances the overall excitement.
Syros gets three drive modes as well as three terrain modes - Snow, Mud and Sand. So while it may be driven mostly on tarmac, Kia is underlining its ability to tackle a variety of road surfaces as well.
Syros is equipped with three driving modes and three terrain modes: Snow, Mud, and Sand. While it is primarily designed for tarmac driving, Kia emphasizes its capability to handle diverse road conditions effectively. The ride quality and management of noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) levels are commendable. Even when navigating uneven roads or stop-and-go traffic, the Syros maintains a sense of calm and composure. The dual-clutch transmission (DCT) offers an enjoyable driving experience; however, the engine may exhibit some resistance in high-demand scenarios. Overall, it effectively responds to driving commands in most situations.
Syros gets six airbags across variants. What is also standard are Tyre-Pressure Monitoring System, ABS with EBD, Hill-start Assist Control, Front and Rear Parking sensors and Brakeforce Assist System, among others.

Kia Syros: Verdict

The Syros is an exceptional and distinctive offering, which explains Kia's significant investment in it. There is a possibility that it may impact the market share of the Sonet, as numerous features are uniformly available across its variants. Additionally, the safety features are extensive, and the overall list of amenities is quite impressive.

The Syros presents a controversial design, which could either deter or attract potential customers. Despite being priced above the Sonet and other sub-four-meter SUVs, it appeals to those in search of something unique and beyond the conventional options available.
