1. Examine for damages or missing items
Upon receiving your vehicle, conduct a comprehensive visual inspection of the exterior paint for any scuffs, scratches, dents, or other forms of damage that may have occurred during servicing. Additionally, inspect the interior for any missing or misplaced items, including tools, floor mats, spare parts, or other belongings. Assess the alloy wheels for any signs of damage. Furthermore, if you requested an interior cleaning, ensure that the interior is free of dust.

2. Review the invoice
It is essential to meticulously review the invoice to verify that the services rendered and parts replaced correspond with the job card you approved. Be vigilant for any unexpected charges or parts that were not previously discussed. Should you identify any discrepancies, address them promptly with the service advisor. In the case of a complimentary service, confirm that no labor charges have been applied. Note that charges for consumables, such as engine oil and air and oil filters, are billed separately and must be settled regardless of whether the service was free or paid.

3. Check fluids and filters
Ensure that vital fluids, including engine oil, brake fluid, coolant, and windshield washer fluid, have been adequately topped up or replaced. Use the dipstick to verify the oil level and confirm that it has been changed. Additionally, inspect the air filters; they should appear clean and devoid of dirt. For vehicles with high mileage, it is advisable to check that the spark plugs and fuel filters have been examined as per the intervals specified in your service manual, as this is crucial for maintaining your vehicle.

4. Take a test drive
Conduct a brief drive with your vehicle to assess the performance of the pedals, brakes, and steering. The brakes should respond effectively without producing any squealing, squeaking, or grinding sounds. The steering should operate smoothly and without vibrations. Ensure that the pedals are neither excessively spongy nor overly tight.

If the vehicle's brake pads were replaced, the brakes might feel slightly inconsistent at first. Drive on less crowded roads for a few kilometres and use the brakes a few times to break in those fresh pads.

Also, ensure the wheel alignment and balancing were done if requested. This can be checked by seeing if your car holds a straight driving line at higher speeds and if there are vibrations or disbalances in the vehicle.

5 Inspect the tyres and battery

Check the tyre pressure and look for any visible damage to the tyres. Service centres sometimes neglect to inflate the tyres correctly. If your tyres were rotated during service, ensure they are positioned according to the recommended rotation pattern.

Also, inspect the car battery for clean terminals. If the battery was serviced, ensure it has sufficient charge and that the electrolyte levels are adequate.
