13 days ago | 5 Views
As cities in India continue to expand and change, the landscape of car ownership is also shifting significantly. Spinny, the top full-stack used car platform in India, has published its Q1 2025 report, highlighting important trends that are altering how Indians purchase second-hand cars. The report showcases a notable increase in online buying, a rise in female car buyers, and a growing interest in automatic and electric vehicles, illustrating a vibrant and rapidly evolving market.
Digital-first car purchasing is now becoming the norm
More and more Indian consumers are turning to online car buying as their go-to option. In the first quarter of 2025, a whopping 77 percent of Spinny's sales came from digital channels, up from 75 percent in 2024 and 70 percent in 2023. This trend shows that people are increasingly trusting online platforms for their transparency, convenience, and efficiency.
Financing has been a major factor in this change, particularly for younger buyers aged 25 to 30. In Q1 2025, 57 percent of Spinny’s customers chose to finance their vehicles, indicating a rising demand for easy and flexible financing solutions. Jaipur stood out, with 60 percent of car purchases made through financing options.
There’s a growing demand for automatic cars
Convenience is everything these days, and automatic cars are more popular than ever. In the first quarter of 2025, they accounted for 29% of all sales, rising from 24% in 2024. The ongoing challenges of city traffic and the simplicity of driving automatics are fueling this trend.
Compact SUVs and hatchbacks continue to be popular choices
Compact SUVs experienced a strong 20 percent growth compared to last year, with the Ford EcoSport taking the lead. The Tata Nexon and Hyundai Venue are also becoming more popular. These models are favored for Indian roads because of their adaptability and noticeable presence.
On the other hand, hatchbacks remain a popular option. In the first quarter of 2025, the Renault Kwid, Hyundai Grand i10, and Maruti Suzuki Swift were the top choices, with the Swift surpassing the Baleno in popularity this year.
The popularity of luxury and electric cars is growing
Interest in high-end vehicles is still robust. The Jeep Compass is the frontrunner in Spinny Max’s luxury car category, trailed by the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA. On the electric front, the Tata Nexon EV is leading the way, with Pune recognized as the top city for used EV sales.
When it comes to fuel choices, traditional options dominate, with petrol cars making up 84% of sales. Diesel accounts for 10%, CNG for 4%, and electric vehicles represent 2%. However, the electric segment is anticipated to expand as awareness and adoption of EVs increase.
Women consumers are still influencing the market
The impact of female buyers in the used car market is on the rise. Their percentage increased from 26% in 2024 to 28% in the first quarter of 2025, reaching a high of 30% in March. Kochi had the largest proportion of women buyers, while Coimbatore experienced the most significant growth in financing, with 27% of women choosing to take out loans.
Additionally, women are shaping preferences for car types—60% favor automatic hatchbacks, and 18% lean towards compact SUVs, highlighting their focus on practicality and ease of driving.
Leading cities for car purchases and delivery patterns
Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Delhi have taken the lead as the top three cities for buying used cars. Meanwhile, Pune has made a mark with a notable 40 percent share in electric vehicle sales, highlighting a growing interest in eco-friendly transportation in the region.
On the delivery front, Spinny's hub-based approach is becoming increasingly popular. In the first quarter of 2025, 78 percent of cars were delivered via Spinny Hubs, a rise from 74 percent in 2024. However, home deliveries dipped slightly to 22 percent, suggesting that many buyers still favor picking up their vehicles in person and conducting inspections.
