Kolkata is poised to establish the world's second-largest electric vehicle charging hub, following only China. This facility is being developed in the Thakurpukur area of South Kolkata and will feature 300 chargers, enabling simultaneous charging for 300 electric vehicles. The hub is anticipated to commence operations by August of this year. It will include both slow and fast chargers, with a maximum capacity of 120 kWh, and approximately 20 percent of the chargers will be fast chargers.

Currently, China boasts the largest electric vehicle charging station globally, which accommodates 650 chargers at a single site. In India, the largest existing single-site EV charging hub is located in Gurgaon, offering 160 charging points. The new hub in Kolkata is set to surpass this, as reported by PTI. The construction of this electric vehicle charging hub is being undertaken by EzUrja on a nearly two-acre site of the abandoned PSU Andrew Yule & Co. plant.

Regarding the forthcoming EV charging hub, Ashhok Kapoor, Managing Director of EzUrja, stated that this will be the company's inaugural EV charging hub project. "It is being developed for 300 vehicles of Snap-E, the all-electric app-based cab service. Currently, the largest single-site EV charging hub in India is in Gurgaon, which has 160 charging points," he noted. The project is projected to require an investment of ₹7.5 crore and is expected to be operational by August, just in time for Durga Puja, Kapoor added.

He also mentioned that all chargers utilized at the forthcoming charging hub are being produced locally at EzUrja's facility in Himachal Pradesh. "The hub will feature a combination of fast and slow chargers, with capacity loads reaching up to 120 kWh. Fast chargers will account for approximately 20 percent of the total," he added. The company has disclosed that the hub's total load capacity will be 6 MW. To promote sustainability, the company plans to install solar panels and storage batteries. "We anticipate generating around 40 percent of the load from the microgrid we are developing on-site to ensure an environmentally friendly and dependable energy supply," he stated.
