The Indian automotive sector commenced 2025 on a favorable note, demonstrating commendable growth across various segments. Data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) indicates a moderate year-on-year increase of 2.5 percent in overall domestic sales. In January 2025, total domestic sales reached 1,935,696 units across all segments, compared to 1,888,648 units sold in January 2024.
The leading national organization expresses optimism regarding the future of the Indian automotive industry, particularly following the recent union budget announcement. Rajesh Menon, Director General of SIAM, remarked that the budget's focus on long-term economic growth, along with changes to personal income tax and a reduction in interest rates by the Reserve Bank of India, is expected to enhance consumer confidence and stimulate demand within the automotive sector.
Notably, the passenger vehicle segment achieved its highest monthly sales to date in January, recording a year-on-year growth of 3.5 percent with total domestic sales of 351,310 units. This is an increase from the 339,441 passenger vehicles sold domestically during the same month the previous year.
Additionally, the two-wheeler segment also reported a year-on-year growth of 2.5 percent, with total domestic sales amounting to 1,935,696 units in January. This reflects an increase from the 1,888,648 units sold in the corresponding month of the previous year.
Surging export market
While domestic sales across various segments have remained relatively stable, exports experienced a remarkable increase in January 2025. The industry reported total exports of 462,500 units for the month, marking a substantial rise of 40.2 percent compared to the 329,915 units exported in January 2024.
In this period, 57,585 units of passenger vehicles were exported, reflecting an impressive growth rate of nearly 17 percent over the figures from January 2024, when 49,245 passenger vehicles were exported. Additionally, the two-wheeler sector witnessed an extraordinary surge in exports, with a year-on-year increase of 46.2 percent. A total of 380,528 two-wheelers were exported from India in January 2025, compared to 260,308 units exported in the same month the previous year.
