In a significant move towards sustainable logistics, Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) successfully transported 156,724 vehicles nationwide via rail freight in 2024. This accounted for 26 percent of the company's total domestic wholesale figures for the year. By opting for rail transport instead of road, HMIL achieved a reduction of 18,352 tons in CO2 emissions, demonstrating that sustainability can coexist with operational efficiency.

Hyundai is progressively adopting rail freight as a more environmentally friendly and effective method for vehicle transportation. Notably, all vehicles destined for the North-East region are now transported exclusively by rail, underscoring the capabilities of India's extensive rail infrastructure.

In remarks regarding this accomplishment, Mr. Tarun Garg, Whole-time Director and COO of HMIL, emphasized the company's commitment to sustainability. He remarked, "By leveraging the comprehensive rail network of Indian Railways to deliver Hyundai vehicles from our manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur, Chennai, to various locations across the country, we have successfully avoided 18,352 tons of CO2 emissions in the calendar year 2024 while dispatching 156,724 units. HMIL is dedicated to continuing the use of rail freight to enhance its logistics operations, contributing to a long-term decrease in emissions."

A Greener Journey

In the four-year period from 2021 to 2024, Hyundai has successfully transported more than 537,000 vehicles via rail. This initiative has significantly reduced the company's carbon footprint, preventing the release of 63,452 tons of CO2 emissions, which is comparable to the environmental benefit of planting thousands of trees annually, all achieved through a reevaluation of their vehicle delivery methods.

Hyundai's transition to rail freight coincides with the Indian government's increased investments in rail infrastructure. The development of dedicated freight corridors and the introduction of energy-efficient rolling stock are enhancing the speed, reliability, and environmental sustainability of rail logistics.

What Makes Rail Freight a Smart Move?

The transportation of goods via rail significantly minimizes the carbon footprint compared to conventional truck transportation. This method also decreases the likelihood of road accidents. Furthermore, rail networks provide more efficient connections to remote areas, such as the North-East. Moreover, for longer distances, rail transport can be more cost-effective while alleviating the deterioration of road infrastructure.
