The second-generation Hyundai Nexo fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) was introduced at the Seoul Mobility Show in South Korea. This refreshed mid-size SUV embodies Hyundai's vision for hydrogen technology, showcasing enhancements in design, features, and powertrains. The new Nexo adopts the brand's 'Art of Steel' design philosophy, which Hyundai states symbolizes strength and adaptability.

The exterior of the Nexo features striking lines and a sturdy framework, presenting a bold and rugged aesthetic. A notable aspect of the updated model is the 'HTWO' lamps, which serve as Hyundai's signature for its hydrogen brand, giving the vehicle a unique identity.

The Nexo's doors are adorned with horizontal groove patterns that emphasize durability, while a reinforced arch-shaped cross-section enhances structural integrity. It will be available in six color options, including a unique Goyo Copper Pearl inspired by the natural beauty of Korea. A three-coat paint system endows the vehicle with a dynamic appearance that shifts in color depending on the lighting conditions.

Second gen Hyundai Nexo: Cabin and features

The interior of the second-generation Nexo is more spacious, featuring high-quality materials and modern technology. It boasts a soft-touch padded interior with a driver-focused layout, including a curved digital dashboard and an island-style center console. Hyundai has also incorporated digital side mirrors into the dashboard to improve visibility and aerodynamics.

With a cargo capacity of up to 993 liters, the SUV offers ample storage space, making it ideal for families. The company claims enhanced legroom for passengers, along with wider rear doors for easier access. Additionally, the second row of seats is equipped with ventilation and an improved recline angle. Other significant features include ambient lighting that responds to speed alerts, a panoramic roof to enhance the sense of space, and eco-friendly materials such as recycled PET fabric and bio-process leather.

Second gen Hyundai Nexo: Powertrain

Hyundai has implemented significant enhancements to the powertrain of the Nexo. The updated fuel cell system now delivers a maximum output of 147.5 bhp, reflecting a 16 percent improvement over its predecessor. The electric motor has also been upgraded, generating a peak output of 150 kW, which allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.8 seconds, a notable reduction from the previous 9.2 seconds.

Additionally, the SUV's hydrogen tank capacity has been increased from 6.33 kg to 6.69 kg, enabling a target range of over 700 km on a full tank. The Nexo has seen enhancements in low-temperature performance, durability, and features smart regenerative braking that optimizes energy recovery in real-time according to driving conditions. Hyundai has also focused on reducing noise levels through the implementation of Active Noise Control-Road (ANC-R) technology and the use of noise-reducing tires, thereby enhancing the overall ride quality. Practically, the European variant of the Nexo is capable of towing up to 1,000 kg.
