Hyundai Motor is set to make significant inroads into the electric vehicle market in India with the introduction of models such as the Creta EV and other forthcoming electric vehicles. The South Korean automotive leader has expressed its ambition to secure a 20% share of the electric four-wheeler market in the long term, as it pivots towards sustainable mobility solutions. Currently, Hyundai offers the Ioniq 5 electric SUV in addition to the recently launched Creta EV. In the near future, the company intends to unveil several more models in the Indian market.

The Hyundai Creta EV, which marks the company's inaugural electric vehicle in India derived from an existing internal combustion engine model, was officially launched on January 17 at the recently held Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. Priced starting at ₹17.99 lakh (ex-showroom), the Creta EV is positioned to compete with other compact electric vehicles such as the Tata Curvv EV, Maruti e Vitara, and MG ZS EV.

Hyundai plans major EV offensive in India

Hyundai Motor announced its intention to secure a minimum of 20 per cent of the electric vehicle (EV) market share in India during an earnings call held prior to the quarterly sales report. Tarun Garg, Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai Motor India Limited, stated, "Our long-term objective is indeed to achieve a 20 per cent market share in the EV sector. Currently, we hold approximately 14 to 15 per cent in the internal combustion engine (ICE) market." In addition to the Creta EV and Ioniq 5, the automaker plans to introduce at least three more electric vehicles in India shortly, enhancing its competitiveness against Tata Motors, the leading player in the EV market.

Hyundai pins big hopes on Creta EV

Hyundai anticipates that the Creta EV will be instrumental in advancing the company's electric vehicle strategy and expanding its presence in this market segment. This electric variant of India's best-selling compact SUV marks the first instance of local production by the Korean automotive manufacturer. Unsoo Kim, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor India Limited, stated, "The Creta Electric is poised to redefine the capabilities of electric SUVs... With over 1.1 million Creta owners and the confidence it inspires, we believe that no other vehicle is better suited to convey the message of embarking on the EV journey."

The manufacturer aims for the Creta EV to account for at least 10 per cent of the overall sales of this popular model in India. The Creta SUV, available in both petrol and diesel options, currently achieves an average monthly sales figure exceeding 10,000 units. Hyundai projects that the electric version of the SUV will reach a sales target of at least 1,000 units per month. Since its launch nearly ten years ago, the Creta SUV has surpassed 1.1 million units sold across India.
