Hyundai NEXO to Undergo Hydrogen Vehicle Trials in India Through Indian Oil Partnership
10 days ago | 5 Views
Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has teamed up with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IndianOil) to dive into the future of hydrogen-powered cars in India. They’ve signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to kick off real-world testing of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) on Indian roads. As part of this deal, Hyundai has given IndianOil one of its hydrogen-powered SUVs, the Hyundai NEXO, for a two-year test drive covering about 40,000 kilometers.
The aim is to evaluate how the vehicle performs, its reliability, and what maintenance it needs in Indian conditions. The trial will also look into the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) to see how cost-effective and efficient these hydrogen vehicles can be over time. Both companies are hoping the findings will shed light on the economic and environmental perks of hydrogen mobility. With this partnership, Hyundai and IndianOil are set on making cleaner and more sustainable transportation a reality in India.
Upcoming plans
Hyundai is just getting started. They're teaming up with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) to create a cutting-edge Hydrogen Innovation Centre. This place will help startups and car manufacturers test out their hydrogen tech and parts, and it's set to become a key spot for green hydrogen innovation.
What's the deal with hydrogen?
Hydrogen fuel cell cars like the Hyundai NEXO create electricity by mixing hydrogen and oxygen, with the only byproduct being water vapor. These cars are viewed as a great way to lower carbon emissions and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Unsoo Kim, the Managing Director of HMIL, commented on the collaboration, stating, 'We want to merge Hyundai’s global hydrogen tech with India’s energy know-how to make green hydrogen affordable and sustainable.
This partnership is a significant move in showcasing hydrogen's potential as a clean fuel for the future.' Alok Sharma, the Director of R&D at IndianOil, also mentioned, 'Hydrogen fuel is crucial for India’s clean energy future. Collaborating with Hyundai will enhance our understanding and development of fuel cell technology for more eco-friendly transportation.
