Hyundai Creta to Tata Punch: Overview of Flex-Fuel Vehicles at Auto Expo 2025

Electric vehicles may currently be a prominent topic in India; however, flex-fuel emerged as a significant alternative fuel at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo. This fuel type consists of a mixture of petrol and ethanol, resulting in reduced fuel expenses due to the incorporation of ethanol or methanol. Below are three flex-fuel-powered vehicles showcased at the Auto Expo 2025.

Hyundai Creta

Hyundai Creta Flex Fuel features a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged engine, which is also found in the Hyundai i20, Venue, and Kia Sonet. This engine produces a maximum output of 118 bhp at 6,000 rpm and achieves a peak torque of 172 Nm at 1,500 rpm. It is coupled with a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Notably, this specific engine and transmission pairing has not been previously available in any Hyundai models currently sold in India. Furthermore, the engine has been adapted to function with a variety of fuels ranging from E0 to E100, encompassing both petrol and ethanol.

Tata Punch

A prototype of the Tata Punch Flex Fuel was showcased at the 2025 Auto Expo. This particular variant of the Tata Punch is designed to run on 85 percent ethanol fuel as well as 100 per cent ethanol. The exterior of the Punch Flex Fuel remains unchanged; however, Tata Motors has implemented significant mechanical modifications.

To enable the Tata Punch's engine to function with flex-fuel, Tata Motors has introduced several mechanical enhancements. These include a sophisticated software system and an advanced engine control mechanism that can automatically adapt to different ethanol fuel mixtures in real time.

The fuel injection system has been upgraded with heating capabilities and high-flow injectors, ensuring smooth engine starts even in cold conditions. Additionally, Tata has incorporated intelligent ethanol percentage detection, allowing for seamless transitions between various ethanol blends. An advanced exhaust after-treatment system has also been integrated to reduce harmful emissions.
