Hyundai Motor India has revealed the enhancement of its collaboration with Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Limited (ARE&M). As part of this agreement, the automotive manufacturer will integrate AMARON’s domestically produced AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery technology into its local product offerings. This technology will serve as a starting, lighting, and ignition (SLI) battery.
Positioning itself as a pioneer among Indian car manufacturers in adopting localized AGM technology batteries, Hyundai plans to incorporate these indigenously produced AGM batteries into models such as the Hyundai Creta and Verna, targeting implementation in the fourth quarter of the fiscal year 2024-2025. This initiative aligns with HMIL’s commitment to localization and the introduction of innovative technologies sourced locally for Indian consumers.
Hyundai asserts that the Made-in-India Amaron AGM batteries have demonstrated a performance improvement of approximately 150 percent over traditional CMF (Complete Maintenance Free) batteries in extensive real-world durability assessments. With a broader operational temperature range and an extended lifespan, AGM batteries are considered well-suited for the driving conditions prevalent in India.
Benefits of AGM batteries
Amara Raja AGM batteries are reported to provide rapid charging capabilities, extended lifespan, low self-discharge rates, minimal maintenance requirements, and high power efficiency, rendering them ideal for vehicles equipped with Idle Stop and Go (ISG) systems. Additionally, these batteries are said to facilitate smoother engine starts and enhance energy efficiency to accommodate the increased electrical demands of modern automobiles.
Hyundai asserts that these batteries have undergone rigorous testing at its global research and development center located in Namyang, South Korea. This process has confirmed the compliance of Amara Raja’s Made-in-India AGM batteries with Indian emission regulations.
The automaker emphasized that the localization initiative not only fosters local employment and economic development but also contributes to cost reduction and a decreased carbon footprint by minimizing reliance on imports. Moreover, the domestically produced AGM batteries will empower HMIL to launch next-generation products specifically designed for the Indian market, which will feature enhanced range, performance, and reduced emissions.
HMIL maintains a commitment to advancing its localization initiatives through a dedicated localization team that collaborates with over 194 suppliers for more than 1,238 components and trim parts at its manufacturing facility in Chennai. This effort is complemented by a targeted localization strategy for its forthcoming plant in Talegaon, Maharashtra.
