Hyundai Creta EV Set to Boost Electric Vehicle Adoption in India by 2025-26, Says COO Tarun Garg

Hyundai Creta EV has emerged as a significant topic of discussion in the Indian passenger vehicle sector, with its official launch anticipated at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 this week. The South Korean automotive manufacturer is making a substantial investment in the Hyundai Creta EV, aiming not only to enhance its sales figures but also to propel the growth of the Indian electric vehicle market during 2025-26.
Tarun Garg, COO of Hyundai Motor India Ltd., asserts that the Indian passenger vehicle market is poised for increased electric vehicle adoption in 2025 and 2026. His remarks coincide with Hyundai's entry into the Indian mass-market electric vehicle segment through the Creta EV, which will serve as the fully electric version of its well-received Creta SUV. The company intends to introduce four electric vehicles in India across various segments, including options below the mid-sized SUV category.
In an interview with PTI, Garg suggested that an internal analysis, supplemented by insights from external consultants, indicates that electric vehicle penetration in India could reach 17 per cent by 2030. "India is currently in the early phases of electrification. Last year, we concluded with approximately 2.4 per cent electrification. I firmly believe that 2025 and 2026 will serve as pivotal years for electrification, with the Creta EV playing a crucial role," he stated, adding, "I am convinced that 2026 will witness a significant increase in EV penetration, potentially leading to a doubling of EV sales." However, he noted that this growth is expected to begin towards the end of 2025, with 2026 being a more suitable timeframe for assessing the full-year impact.
Why Hyundai thinks 2026 will see a big leap in India's EV journey
The anticipation for a significant advancement in the Indian electric vehicle market by 2026 is supported by Garg's assertion that this period will witness the introduction of robust products from prominent original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and well-established brands in the electric vehicle sector. Notably, Garg's remarks coincide with the upcoming launch of the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, which marks the first electric offering from Hyundai's main competitor in India, set to debut at the Bharat Mobility Global Auto Show in 2025. Additionally, Mahindra has recently unveiled the XEV 9e and BE 6 SUVs, while also developing the XUV 3XO EV, a next-generation version of the XUV 400 EV. Tata Motors is also preparing to introduce models such as the Sierra EV and Harrier EV, among others.
Hyundai betting big on Creta EV
Garg asserts that the Hyundai Creta EV is poised to significantly contribute to both the brand's electrification efforts and the broader Indian automotive sector. He noted that electric vehicle consumers in India are seeking robust brands from established original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) that offer reliability and sufficient range to alleviate concerns regarding range anxiety. "I believe the Creta EV meets all these requirements," he stated, referencing the upcoming model's range of 390 km and 473 km across its two variants, alongside the strong brand reputation of the Creta ICE, which has achieved cumulative sales exceeding 1.1 million units.
Additionally, Garg suggested that Hyundai is considering the electrification of segments below the Creta, indicating the potential introduction of an electric vehicle positioned beneath the mid-size SUV category in the future. “We are exploring both 'Creta minus' and 'Creta plus' segments," he remarked, further emphasizing, “We are also examining dedicated electric vehicles as well as derived electric models. Our aim is to establish a strong presence in the EV market comparable to our position in the ICE market... we are confident in our ability to achieve similar success in the EV sector.”
