Gadkari further indicated that the results and effectiveness of the GNSS-based toll collection system on the Dwarka Expressway will inform the deployment of this technology at other toll plazas nationwide. "A Request for Proposal (RFP) has been issued for the implementation of a barrier-free tolling system on the Dwarka Expressway, with plans to extend this to additional toll plazas in a phased approach, contingent upon the results and success of the Dwarka Expressway implementation," PTI reported Gadkari as stating.
The minister also noted that this innovative technology is anticipated to reduce the operational costs associated with traditional physical toll plazas. Nevertheless, it will function in conjunction with the existing FASTag-based tolling system. Initially, dedicated GNSS lanes will be designated for vehicles utilizing GNSS technology.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) intends to integrate the GNSS-based electronic toll collection system within the current FASTag framework, initially adopting a hybrid model where both RFID-based and GNSS-based electronic toll collection systems will operate concurrently. Dedicated GNSS lanes will be established at toll plazas, enabling vehicles equipped with GNSS-based electronic toll collection to pass through without stopping. However, as the GNSS-based electronic toll collection system gains traction, all lanes are expected to transition to GNSS lanes.
GNSS-based toll collection: How it works
The electronic toll collection system utilizing GNSS technology incorporates a hybrid model in conjunction with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), which is presently implemented in FASTag. This innovative system will feature virtual toll booths designed to monitor vehicles as they enter and exit the tolled segments of the highways.
Virtual gantries will be strategically positioned along the tolled roadway, enabling interaction with GNSS-equipped vehicles, thereby eliminating the need for physical gantries. These virtual gantries will gather critical vehicle data, such as registration numbers, vehicle classifications, and the bank account information of the users.
As vehicles traverse these virtual toll booths, the GNSS-based system will be automatically activated to collect the toll, deducting the specified amount from the users' bank accounts. The toll plazas will include designated GNSS lanes, ensuring a seamless flow of traffic for vehicles utilizing this technology.
