Hero Xtreme 250R First Ride Review: A True 250cc Challenger?
2 days ago | 5 Views
At EICMA 2023, Hero MotoCorp unveiled the Concept 2.5R XTunt, a naked motorcycle designed specifically for stunt street riding, generating significant excitement. Given the popularity of naked motorcycles in the Indian market, Hero MotoCorp decided to move forward with production, resulting in the Xtreme 250R, the production version of the Concept 2.5R XTunt.
In 2024, the Xtreme 250R was officially introduced at EICMA 2024, followed by its launch at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, with a price tag of ₹1.80 lakh ex-showroom. It competes with models such as the Keeway K300 SF, Bajaj Dominar 250, Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z, Suzuki Gixxer 250, and Honda CB300F. So, is it worth considering over its competitors? Hero invited us to the picturesque city of Udaipur to test the new Xtreme 250R, and here are our impressions.
Hero Xtreme 250R: Aesthetic Overview
The Xtreme 250R is undeniably striking, featuring a robust design that builds upon the attention garnered by the Concept 2.5R XTunt. It embodies the essence of a true naked streetfighter, highlighted by an aggressive LED headlamp, a muscular fuel tank with tank shrouds, and an upswept rear section. The rear design is particularly noteworthy, as Hero MotoCorp has relocated the number plate to the rear tire hugger, rather than the motorcycle's tail. The exhaust is a compact, stubby unit that draws design inspiration from other Hero models. Additionally, the motorcycle is equipped with 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels.
Hero MotoCorp will offer the Xtreme 250R in three colour options: Neon Shooting Star, Stealth Black, and Firestorm Red. Among these, the Firestorm Red variant uniquely features upside-down forks finished in a striking golden hue.
Hero Xtreme 250R: How does it handling and the ride quality?
The Xtreme 250R features a robust steel trellis frame, supported by 43 mm upside-down forks at the front and a rear mono-shock with a 6-step preload adjustment. This motorcycle excels in cornering performance; however, the tyres could offer improved feedback. Regarding ride quality, the suspension is adequately responsive and manages rough terrain effectively, provided the rider maintains moderate speeds. At highway velocities, the motorcycle exhibits stability and does not exhibit excessive bouncing.
Weighing in at a mere 167.7 kg, the Xtreme 160R is relatively lightweight, and with a seat height of 806 mm, it is suitable for a wide range of riders. The riding position is somewhat aggressive, with the foot pegs positioned slightly rearward, necessitating a slight reach to the handlebars.
Hero Xtreme 250R: How does the engine perform?
The Hero Xtreme 250R is equipped with a 249.03 cc single-cylinder engine featuring liquid cooling. This powertrain generates a maximum output of 29.58 bhp at 9,250 rpm and delivers a peak torque of 25 Nm at 7,250 rpm. While there is a slight vibration at lower RPMs that may go unnoticed, the engine becomes more refined in the mid-range. However, as the RPMs approach the upper limits, vibrations increase, which can be somewhat distracting, particularly as the fuel tank, foot pegs, and handlebars also begin to vibrate. Nevertheless, the engine exhibits a lively character, eagerly reaching its redline. Therefore, if you enjoy pushing the engine to higher RPMs, you may find this engine appealing. At a speed of 100 km/h, the engine operates smoothly, but as speeds increase beyond this point, the refinement diminishes.
The motorcycle features a 6-speed gearbox equipped with a slip-and-assist clutch, which operates smoothly with minimal effort required for clutch engagement. Rev-matching and downshifting are also seamless. In terms of fuel efficiency, the instrument cluster indicates an average of approximately 30 km/l, although actual fuel consumption may vary based on riding style.
Regarding the braking system, the Hero Xtreme 250R utilizes a 320 mm petal disc at the front and a 230 mm petal disc at the rear, complemented by a dual-channel anti-lock braking system and selectable Road and Track modes. The front brake lever requires a significant pull, while the rear disc brake tends to lock up, causing the motorcycle to fishtail. This inconsistency in braking performance can undermine rider confidence.
Hero Xtreme 250R: What are the features on offer?
The Hero Xtreme 250R features comprehensive LED lighting, including hazard lights and an automatic headlamp. Additionally, it boasts a digital instrument cluster that provides a wide range of information, such as average fuel economy, real-time fuel economy, lap timer, acceleration timer, and Bluetooth connectivity for music control and navigation. The instrument cluster remains clearly visible in most sunlight conditions. However, it would have been preferable if the Xtreme 250R included the TFT screen found in the XPulse 210, as it would enhance the overall aesthetic and premium feel. A USB port is also available for charging mobile devices.
Hero Xtreme 250R: Is it Worth Purchasing?
It is undeniable that the Xtreme 250R stands out as one of the most visually appealing naked streetfighters in its category, boasting a commanding road presence. The engine is responsive and enjoyable, encouraging riders to push it towards the redline, while the suspension is well-tuned. The only area that falls short is the braking system, so I recommend taking a test ride of the Xtreme 250R. Priced at ₹1.80 lakh ex-showroom, the Xtreme 250R presents a compelling case against its competitors.
