The Mahakumbh Mela, a significant religious congregation in India, has seen an influx of luxury vehicles among its devotees. From Mercedes-Benz SUVs to Rolls Royce, a wide array of high-end cars has been observed at the event. Additionally, vehicles such as the Land Rover Defender, Audi, and BMW have also made their presence known.
Among the favoured premium vehicles for the sadhus and their followers are the Hyundai Creta, Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner, Innova, Mahindra Xylo, and Tata Safari, all of which reflect a preference for stylish travel during this grand occasion. It is noteworthy that many sadhus tend to favour vehicles in white or saffron, colours that are traditionally associated with asceticism.
These luxurious automobiles navigate the temporary streets of the expansive 4000-hectare Mahakumbh Nagar tent city, situated along the banks of the Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers converge. As symbols of wealth, these vehicles attract attention and starkly contrast with the numerous sadhus whose narratives of self-denial and simplicity serve as powerful examples in a tent city where countless individuals are practising austerity in pursuit of salvation at the Mahaku
Many of these vehicles are reportedly owned by senior sadhus, including Peetadheeshwars, Maha Mandaleshwars, Mahants, and Mandaleshwars, while others are said to belong to their disciples and followers.
In the camp of Swami Vasudevanand Saraswati, a member of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra Trust, two Rolls Royces, valued at approximately ₹20 crores, were observed parked.
Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati also made his entrance at the Mela in a luxurious van that belonged to his late guru, Shankaracharya Swaroopanand Saraswati. This vanity van, gifted to Shankaracharya Swaroopanand by an industrialist, is reported to be worth over ₹1 crore.

The Uttar Pradesh government is making preparations to address substantial traffic congestion in anticipation of the Maha Kumbh 2025 pilgrimage, which is set to begin on January 13 in Prayagraj. To facilitate efficient traffic management during the seven-week event, the administration has devised a detailed plan that incorporates the use of electric buses and FASTag-enabled parking systems. The state expects around 400 million pilgrims and approximately 2.5 million vehicles to converge in the city for the Maha Kumbh. Furthermore, a traffic advisory has been issued for attendees, outlining suggested routes to avoid, designated parking locations, and other critical traffic regulations.
The Maha Kumbh Mela is acknowledged as one of the largest religious assemblies in the world, drawing Hindu devotees to the Sangam, the revered confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers in Prayagraj, which takes place every 12 years. The event is planned to last until February 26.
