First Ride Review: Aprilia Tuono 457 Brings RS Agility with Added Versatility
2 months ago | 5 Views
The Aprilia RS 457 has made a significant impression with its design and performance. It exemplifies Aprilia's ability to manufacture a world-class motorcycle in India, and it is fair to assert that this fully-faired model has established new standards in various aspects. Historically, each new Aprilia RS model introduced globally has been accompanied by a naked streetfighter known as the Tuono. This trend continues in India with the introduction of the Tuono 457, which is poised to take to the streets. Sharing the same foundational elements as the RS, is the Tuono 457 the motorcycle that enthusiasts have been anticipating? We travel to Bengaluru to explore this further.
The Tuono Legacy
The Tuono name originated in 2002, initially derived from the RSV Mille. Since then, the Italian manufacturer has transformed the Tuono nameplate into a V4-powered streetfighter, building upon the RSV4 platform, and subsequently introducing the Tuono 660 and the Tuono 125 for global markets. In India, the Tuono name has become more widely available as a new street-naked model based on the RS 457, marking it as Aprilia's most economical motorcycle in the country to date.
Aprilia Tuono 457: Differences over the RS 457?
The Tuono 457 is built on the same framework as the RS 457 but forgoes the fairing and other components, establishing a distinct identity for the motorcycle. Traditionally recognized as a 'street-naked' model, the Tuono retains the same engine as the RS 457, and this iteration is no exception. It features a newly designed headlamp cluster that differentiates it from both the RS and the larger Tuono models. The overall styling is entirely fresh and, I would argue, somewhat polarizing.
Initially, the bike did not strike me as particularly attractive in the images from EICMA 2024; however, the design tends to become more appealing over time. While I remain somewhat sceptical about the headlamp design, I find myself approximately 60 per cent in favor of it. The new tank extensions on either side enhance the motorcycle's visual presence and serve as another unique styling feature. Aprilia asserts that the 457 platform is entirely new, having been developed from the ground up, and the company intentionally chose to differentiate this model from other Tuonos to create its own distinctive shape and form. It will be intriguing to observe whether the Tuono 457 influences the design of the next Tuono V4 or even the 660.
In a notable change, Aprilia has replaced the clip-on handlebars with a single-piece handlebar. The fuel tank has been slightly reconfigured, now holding 12.7 liters, which is 0.3 liters less than that of the RS 457. The remainder of the motorcycle remains unchanged, featuring an exposed engine, an aluminium-finished chassis, and an M-shaped LED taillight.
The build quality of the Tuono 457 is exceptional, imparting a premium appearance and feel throughout. This motorcycle is produced at Piaggio’s Baramati facility in Maharashtra for both domestic and international markets. While the RS had some inconsistencies, the new Tuono 457 feels more robustly constructed, with a noticeable enhancement in overall fit and finish. The bike is available in two color options: Piranha Red (Red and Black) and Puma Grey (Grey and Red).
Interestingly, the Tuono 457 shares the same wet weight as the RS 457, at 175 kilograms. This similarity is primarily due to the lightweight headlamp and fairing of the RS 457, resulting in only a marginal weight difference between the two models.
Aprilia Tuono 457: Ergonomics
The redesigned handlebar has introduced a significantly different ergonomic experience on the new Tuono. The one-piece handlebar is positioned wider and taller, bringing it closer to the rider, which facilitates a more upright riding position. This adjustment enhances upper body comfort compared to the RS model. The lower section remains unchanged, featuring rear-set foot pegs that now include rubber bushings. Additionally, the cushioning on the Tuono 457 has been softened in comparison to the RS, while the split seat design has been preserved.
With a seat height of 800 mm, the motorcycle is easily accessible for riders of various heights, yet it is spacious enough to accommodate taller individuals. Standing at 6'2", I found the riding position to be comfortable, with a hint of aggression. The bike also boasts a notable road presence, particularly in its striking red and black color scheme.
Aprilia Tuono 457: Features
The 5-inch TFT display has been retained from the RS 457, offering Bluetooth connectivity for music, phone calls, and navigation purposes. The user interface is straightforward and user-friendly. This motorcycle features three riding modes: Eco, Rain, and Sport. Additionally, the electronic system comprises a three-level traction control and switchable ABS. Similar to the RS, the quickshifter is available as an optional feature on the Tuono.
Aprilia Tuono 457: Performance
The Tuono has consistently delivered the power characteristic of the RS model, and the 457 continues this tradition. It retains the same foundational elements, including the engine, without any alterations in tuning. The twin-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine maintains an output of 47 bhp and 43.5 Nm of peak torque, coupled with a 6-speed transmission. Aprilia has enhanced the rear sprocket size by one tooth to improve initial acceleration. This minor adjustment allows the Tuono to achieve quicker starts than the RS in the 0-50 km/h range. Designed for urban environments, the Tuono excels in navigating through traffic, providing a more enjoyable riding experience. The gear shifts are smooth, and the gear ratios remain unchanged from the RS. The engine's tractability reduces the need for frequent downshifts when maneuvering through congested areas.
The engine exhibits an aggressive nature, ready to respond instantly to the throttle. It also demonstrates a calm demeanor when required, showcasing its versatility, which is particularly appealing for both street riding and occasional track use. The bike comfortably accelerates from 40 km/h in fifth gear, offering ample torque at all times, especially beyond 6,000 rpm. On open roads, it continues to pull powerfully, making it easy to reach triple-digit speeds. The Tuono is well-suited for touring, capable of maintaining a comfortable pace of 130 km/h for extended periods. However, the absence of a fairing may make it slightly challenging to sustain higher speeds, so installing a fly screen is advisable for those planning frequent long-distance rides.
The noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) levels are well-managed, with minimal vibrations to report. The exhaust produces an enthusiastic sound, characterized by a raspy bass that is pleasing to the ear.

Aprilia Tuono 457: Handling and Braking
The robust twin-cylinder engine is complemented by a proficient chassis, allowing the Tuono 457 to excel in agility. Its nearly balanced weight distribution facilitates effortless navigation through urban environments. When confronted with a corner, the bike exhibits its RS lineage with remarkable fluidity. Aprilia has retained the suspension travel from the RS model, resulting in a ride quality that remains firm over uneven surfaces, yet it does not compromise comfort. The high-speed stability is exceptional, encouraging riders to push their limits consistently.
Braking performance is smooth and progressive, with Aprilia having taken into account feedback from the RS 457 to enhance the lever's responsiveness. The traction control system is well-calibrated, offering riders the flexibility to select different intervention modes.
Aprilia Tuono 457: Verdict
The Tuono 457 presents a distinctive appearance that captures attention effortlessly. Its proportions are well-balanced, and its performance is exceptional, significantly enhancing its appeal. Unlike the RS, the Tuono possesses a unique character that distinguishes it. With a price tag of ₹3.95 lakh, the new Aprilia Tuono 457 is approximately ₹25,000 less expensive than the RS 457, yet it remains considerably pricier than its nearest competitors, the KTM 390 Duke and Yamaha MT-03. However, this premium pricing is justified by the advantages it offers, making it an attractive option. It is essential for Aprilia to establish a comprehensive sales and service network to support its offerings. If there is a showroom in your vicinity, it is advisable to schedule a test ride.
