Bharat NCAP to Enhance Safety Tests with ADAS Evaluation for Cars
2 months ago | 5 Views
The Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) is poised to unveil its version 2.0, which will enhance the vehicle safety testing framework by incorporating new criteria. Notably, the updated Bharat NCAP will integrate Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) technology, enabling a more comprehensive evaluation of a vehicle's safety ratings. This announcement was made by Ujjwala Karle, Deputy Director and Head of the Technology Group & Digital Twin Lab at ARAI, during the recent ADAS Show in Bengaluru.
Initiated two years ago, the Bharat NCAP was established in India to assess the safety ratings of domestically manufactured vehicles. Currently, it evaluates Indian cars based on three main criteria: Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, and Safety Assist Technologies, which encompass features such as automatic braking and lane-keeping assistance. With the introduction of ADAS, these criteria will be expanded to provide a more thorough assessment of a vehicle's overall safety score when Bharat NCAP 2.0 is implemented by 2027.
What is ADAS?
ADAS represents one of the most advanced safety technologies currently available in vehicles sold in India. Indian automotive manufacturers, such as Tata Motors and Mahindra, have collaborated with global companies to incorporate this feature into their vehicles. This technology utilizes cameras, sensors, and radar to provide assistive safety functions aimed at reducing the likelihood of road accidents. The majority of Indian vehicles equipped with this technology feature level-2 ADAS, which includes functionalities such as blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, and emergency braking.
Why ADAS will be evaluated in Bharat NCAP crash tests?
Karle indicated that the integration of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) into Bharat NCAP's vehicle safety program is currently underway. She emphasized the importance of incorporating this technology into safety criteria, stating that the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) aims for ADAS to serve a purpose beyond mere availability. "The primary challenge is to tailor these features to suit Indian conditions. When these functions are specifically calibrated for India, they can significantly and positively affect users," Karle remarked.
