BYD's Super e-Platform: 400 km Range in 5 Minutes, Rivals ICE Refueling Speed
2 days ago | 5 Views
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has introduced its latest electric vehicle platform, which boasts the ability to charge EVs in a mere five minutes, rivalling the refueling speed of traditional internal combustion engine vehicles at gas stations. Named the Super e-Platform, this innovative system incorporates newly designed blade battery packs that can handle charging rates of up to 10 C, marking it as the highest capacity among mass-produced power batteries globally. The platform is also capable of supporting charging power levels reaching 1,000
BYD, which markets electric models such as the Atto 3, Seal, Sealion 7, and eMax 7 in India, asserts that the Super e-Platform features blade batteries designed for ultra-fast charging, high-performance electric motors, and advanced silicon carbide power chips. The company emphasizes that this new EV architecture showcases its technological expertise.
The Han L EV and Tang L EV are the inaugural electric vehicles utilizing BYD's Super e-Platform. Both models are currently available for pre-sale in China, with an official launch anticipated early next month. BYD has reported that the newly designed blade battery pack and charging system can achieve approximately 400 kilometres of range in just five minutes, as demonstrated during testing of the new Han L electric sedan.
BYD Super e-Platform could be a gamechanger
BYD's innovative Super e-Platform has the potential to revolutionize the global electric vehicle (EV) market in the near future. This platform aims to address the charging concerns of EV users by significantly shortening charging times, thereby positioning the automaker to more effectively compete with rivals such as Tesla.
According to a report by Bloomberg, BYD has indicated that this new platform will serve as the foundation for many of its upcoming electric vehicles. This development could further enhance BYD's position as it strives to compete with Tesla for the title of the world's leading EV seller. In February 2025, Tesla's shipments to China experienced a dramatic decline of 49 percent compared to the same month the previous year, totaling just 30,688 vehicles—the lowest monthly total since July 2022. With the introduction of the new EV platform, BYD is likely to gain a competitive advantage that could adversely affect Tesla's sales.
Additionally, BYD has pledged to establish over 4,000 charging stations throughout China to support its newly upgraded electric vehicles. However, the company has not provided a specific timeline for the completion of this rollout. The charging speed of BYD's new EV platform is expected to surpass that of Tesla's Superchargers, which can add up to 275 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes. Nevertheless, Tesla maintains a significantly larger network, boasting over 65,000 Superchargers globally. Notably, the recently unveiled entry-level CLA electric sedan from Mercedes-Benz Group AG claims it can add 325 kilometers of range with just 10 minutes of charging.
