The BMW Group has introduced a near-production version of its latest iDrive system at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025. Central to this system is the BMW Panoramic Vision, which is integrated with the new BMW Operating System X. This operating system is scheduled for deployment in new BMW models by late 2025.
In this initiative, the manufacturer aims to merge user-centric design with advanced technology to improve the overall driving experience. The new BMW iDrive system is engineered for scalability and will be adopted across all BMW models and powertrains. It features a modular design that facilitates future updates as well.
BMW iDrive Panoramic Vision: What does it entail?
The BMW Panoramic Vision features an innovative Head-Up Display (HUD) concept that extends across the full width of the windshield. This advanced system projects essential driving information directly into the driver's line of sight. The HUD offers a customizable interface, allowing drivers to tailor the displayed data, including navigation details and vehicle status. Users can pin up to six widgets on the upper display using intuitive gestures, enhancing the accessibility of information. Additionally, an optional 3D Head-Up Display can be integrated into this system, projecting navigation and driving assistance information onto the windshield.
BMW iDrive Panoramic Vision: User Controls
The revised BMW iDrive system integrates both tactile and digital controls to enhance user operability. To begin with, it features a multifunction steering wheel equipped with illuminated buttons that offer haptic feedback, minimizing visual distractions during use.
Additionally, the system includes integrated touch controls and voice commands for managing key functions such as navigation and media, enabling the driver to concentrate on the road. Furthermore, vital elements like wipers and indicators are designed with tactile responses to improve ergonomic efficiency.
BMW iDrive Panoramic Vision: BMW Operating System X
The BMW Operating System X serves as the foundation for the latest iteration of iDrive, providing improved flexibility and sustained usability. Built upon an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software framework, it incorporates customizable driving dynamics, ambient lighting, and display themes, facilitating a personalized driving experience.
Additionally, a new version of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant has been upgraded with Large Language Models (LLMs), allowing for comprehensive voice commands and context-sensitive responses, such as identifying nearby charging stations with particular amenities. This system is designed to learn user preferences over time, offering suggestions for features like driving modes or route modifications, thereby minimizing repetitive prompts.
