BMW Remains Optimistic Despite Tesla's Potential Entry into India, Aiming for Increased EV Sales by 2025

As the electric vehicle sector in India gains momentum, BMW Group India is confident in its position within the premium EV market. With global rival Tesla preparing to launch in India, BMW perceives this not as a challenge but as a sign of an evolving ecosystem.

Vikram Pawah, the CEO and Managing Director of BMW Group India, believes that competition is essential for the growth of the market. He stated, "Internationally, we have observed that the entry of new players typically expands the market rather than shrinking it." He further noted that Tesla's arrival is expected to enhance awareness, boost demand, and facilitate the development of EV infrastructure in the country.

BMW has long been a significant player in the realm of electric mobility, consistently reporting strong sales figures. In 2024, the company achieved sales of over 426,000 fully electric vehicles globally, reflecting double-digit growth across the BMW and MINI brands. This positive trend is beginning to manifest in India as well.

BMW India’s increasing EV sales

A report from PTI indicates that BMW Group India has successfully sold 646 electric vehicles in the first quarter of 2025, which accounts for more than half of the total 1,249 units sold throughout 2024. Electric vehicles now constitute around 17 percent of the company's total sales in India, positioning BMW on a promising path to achieve or exceed its target of 15 percent EV sales for 2025.

This achievement is part of a broader trend, as BMW experienced a 7 percent increase in overall car sales during the January to March timeframe, with strong performance across both its combustion and electric vehicle models.

Higher demand

The company maintains a positive outlook on the growth of electric vehicles (EVs), yet acknowledges that internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles still hold greater appeal in India. The forthcoming 2025 BMW X3 SUV is expected to contribute to ICE sales, suggesting that both vehicle types will coexist for an extended period.

As BMW gears up to launch EVs more broadly and enhance its range of premium vehicles, it remains optimistic about the long-term prospects of India as an EV market.
