The BMW iX3 is set to be the inaugural production SUV built on the Neue Klasse platform, making its debut at the IAA Mobility show in Munich in September 2025. This exclusively electric model will mark the beginning of the automaker's transition to its next-generation platform, representing a significant advancement in BMW's electrification efforts.
Alongside the iX3, BMW intends to introduce more than 40 new models or refreshed versions, encompassing electric, plug-in hybrid, and traditional combustion engine variants by 2027, all based on the new Neue Klasse platform. Oliver Zipse, Chairman of BMW, has characterized 2025 as a pivotal year and emphasized the significance of the Neue Klasse initiative, even in light of global market uncertainties.
The Vision Neue Klasse X concept, which will be known as the iX3 in its production version, is currently undergoing testing in South Africa and is nearing completion. Additionally, a new electric sedan, likely to be named the i3, is also in development. Pre-production of the iX3 commenced in late 2024 at BMW's facility in Debrecen, Hungary, with full-scale production expected to begin in late 2025. Furthermore, 2026 will see the launch of an entirely new all-electric sports sedan aimed at competing with the electric version of the BMW 3-Series.
Technological advancements with Neue Klasse models
The Neue Klasse models are anticipated to enhance driving dynamics, improve powertrain efficiency, and advance digitalization. Key innovations include the BMW Panoramic iDrive interface which features a customizable display that spans from pillar to pillar, sixth-generation eDrive technology equipped with high-voltage 800-volt batteries, and a state-of-the-art electronics system supported by four high-performance computers.
Additionally, BMW has unveiled its Vision Driving Experience prototype, which is touted as the most powerful development vehicle to date. This prototype serves as a preview of the future performance benchmark for the Neue Klasse sedan, designed to elevate driving dynamics significantly. A presentation video showcased the excitement of BMW engineers as they tested the prototype.
Financial Performance and Market Outlook
In 2024, BMW's commitment to Neue Klasse models resulted in substantial research and development expenditures amounting to $19.6 billion (€18 billion), which impacted the company's financial performance. The net profit experienced a decline of 36.9 percent, totaling $8.37 billion (€7.68 billion). Nevertheless, sales of electrified models saw an increase of 4.8 percent, with battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales rising by 13.5 percent, accounting for 17.4 percent of total deliveries.
Looking ahead, BMW forecasts a rise in sales for 2025 and plans to reduce capital expenditures to improve cash flow. Despite challenges such as rising tariffs, the company remains optimistic about sustaining its profit margin in the upcoming year.
