The present generation of the BMW 7 Series sedan has been available since 2022, marking its seventh iteration. In the same year, the luxury sedan introduced its fully electric variant, the i7. Now, following three years since the launch of the current 7 Series and i7, BMW is developing a facelift version of these models, anticipated to be unveiled later this year.
BMW 7 Series and i7 facelift: What design updates to expect
The BMW 7 Series, a competitor to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Audi A8, is set to receive numerous enhancements in its facelift. As this is a facelift rather than a new generation, both models are anticipated to showcase a redesigned kidney grille, drawing inspiration from the G60 5 Series. Additionally, modifications may be made to the front and rear bumpers, alloy wheels, and the overall aesthetic of the vehicle. The headlamps and taillights are also expected to undergo significant redesigns.
Inside the vehicle, the updated 7 Series and i7 are likely to feature substantial improvements. Notably, larger touchscreen infotainment systems with enhanced software and user interfaces will be introduced to modernize the technology. Furthermore, updates to the upholstery may be implemented. Nevertheless, the overall layout of the cabin is expected to remain consistent.
BMW 7 Series and i7 facelift: What's on the powertrain front
In terms of powertrain specifications, the 740d xDrive features a diesel engine that produces a peak power of 286 bhp, serving as the entry-level option within the 7 Series lineup. Above this model, there are two hybrid variants, each incorporating an electric motor within the transmission, which contributes an additional 197 bhp of peak power. The 750e xDrive combines a 313 bhp internal combustion engine with the electric motor, resulting in a total power output of 490 bhp and a peak torque of 700 Nm.
The M760e xDrive stands out with its 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine, which alone generates 380 bhp of peak power. With the assistance of the electric motor, this hybrid powertrain achieves a remarkable total output of 571 bhp and a peak torque of 800 Nm. Both plug-in hybrid variants are equipped with an 18.7 kWh battery pack, offering a pure electric range between 77 and 87 kilometres. It is anticipated that BMW will enhance these powertrains to provide a pure electric range of 100 kilometres in the upcoming facelifted model.
Additionally, BMW is expected to introduce an upgraded electric powertrain with the i7 facelift. The current i7 is available in three distinct configurations. The base eDrive50 model delivers a peak power of 455 bhp and a maximum torque of 650 Nm. The more powerful xDrive60 variant produces 544 bhp and 745 Nm of torque. At the top of the range, the i7 M70 xDrive model boasts an impressive 660 bhp and a staggering 1,100 Nm of torque. All three variants are equipped with a 101.7 kWh battery pack, providing a maximum range that varies from 560 kilometres for the M70 xDrive to 615 kilometres for the xDrive60. The facelifted model is expected to feature enhancements in both battery and thermal management systems.
