Assam Police's Border Crossing Incident: Misled by Google Maps, What Happened Next?
1 month ago | 5 Views
Google Maps ranks among the most widely used navigation applications globally. Nevertheless, despite its extensive adoption and acclaim, the application has recently faced scrutiny for directing motorists to incorrect locations, which has tragically resulted in fatalities, including an incident just days ago. A notable case of erroneous navigation data from Google Maps involved a 16-member team from the Assam Police, which was misled into crossing the state border into Nagaland.
While executing a raid, the Assam Police inadvertently entered the Mokokchung district of Nagaland, as reported by PTI. Following the directions provided by Google Maps, the team encountered hostility from local residents and was subsequently detained overnight. The application reportedly misidentified a tea garden situated in Nagaland as being within the boundaries of Assam, prompting the police team to inadvertently cross into Mokokchung district.
Google Maps has been accused of showing wrong navigation data
There have been multiple instances where reliance on Google Maps has led individuals to incorrect destinations. A tragic event occurred a few months ago in Uttar Pradesh, where three individuals lost their lives when their vehicle, misdirected by Google Maps, plunged from an under-construction bridge. In a separate incident last month, another vehicle was directed off the road and into a canal in Uttar Pradesh, resulting in a Tata Tigor carrying three passengers veering off course and falling into the water. Fortunately, all three occupants were rescued unharmed.
Previously, a similar occurrence was reported in North Carolina, USA, where a man tragically died after driving off a collapsed bridge while following Google Maps directions, resulting in a fall of approximately 20 feet.
Last year, a group of tourists from Telangana faced a similar predicament when their Ford Endeavour SUV ended up in a canal in Kerala due to misleading directions from Google Maps.
These incidents have sparked concerns regarding the excessive reliance on Google Maps for navigation, as well as raising questions about the accuracy of its navigation data.
