Aptera Motors has introduced its inaugural production vehicle, an electric car powered by solar energy, at the Consumer Electronics Show 2025 in Las Vegas, United States. This innovative vehicle, recognized as the world's first production-ready solar-powered electric car, features integrated solar panels and is capable of achieving a daily range of up to 60 kilometres without the need for plugging in. The US-based startup reports that it has garnered nearly 50,000 reservations for this solar-powered electric vehicle, which is anticipated to be on the roads shortly.
The design of the Aptera solar-powered electric vehicle is distinctive, resembling a two-seater pod akin to a wingless flying car. It is outfitted with four solar panels strategically placed on the hood, dashboard, roof, and hatch, which can generate up to 700 watts of electricity. The company asserts that the solar-powered vehicle can provide a range of up to 643 kilometres on a single charge, with the solar panels capable of fully recharging the vehicle in under one hour. Furthermore, it is estimated that, under optimal sunny conditions, the electric car could deliver over 16,000 kilometres of solar-powered driving within a year.
The three-wheeled electric vehicle is notably lightweight, constructed from carbon fibre sheet moulding compound. According to the manufacturer, the solar-powered vehicle requires less than one-tenth of the components necessary for traditional vehicles. It also boasts aerodynamics refined at Pininfarina’s wind tunnel in Turin, Italy, achieving a remarkable drag coefficient of 0.13 during testing, setting a new benchmark in the automotive sector. Chris Anthony, co-CEO of Aptera Motors, remarked, “This vehicle represents years of innovation and a steadfast commitment to energy-efficient mobility. CES serves as an ideal platform to present our vision and invite the global community to collaborate in fostering a cleaner, solar-powered future.”
In terms of performance, the Aptera solar-powered electric vehicle is highly competitive. Its single electric motor, designed for front-wheel drive, can deliver a maximum power output of 198 bhp and can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in approximately six seconds.
