Anand Mahindra Shares Bold Vision to Challenge Tesla

The American electric vehicle manufacturer, Tesla, has once again made its presence felt in India. Following the cancellation of its anticipated launch in the country last year, the company has resumed its hiring efforts in 2025, suggesting a renewed interest in entering the Indian market. Tesla has posted 13 job openings based in India, a development that follows a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Elon Musk in the United States, alongside President Donald Trump, which has generated considerable discussion on social media.

A user on the platform ‘X’ inquired of Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, regarding his approach to managing competition. In his characteristically humorous manner, Mahindra responded, “We have been asked similar questions ever since the opening up of the Indian economy in 1991."

The year 1991 marked a significant shift for India as it embraced liberalization, privatization, and globalization, thereby welcoming numerous foreign entities into the market. In the automotive sector, the removal of auto licensing regulations enabled manufacturers to produce vehicles without restrictions, facilitating the entry of international automobile companies such as Hyundai, Daewoo, Ford, and General Motors. This transition introduced innovative technologies, designs, and manufacturing techniques to the Indian market.

In his response on ‘X’, Mahindra further emphasized that despite the heightened competition since 1991, his company has not only endured but continues to thrive. He remarked, “And working like maniacs to still be around & relevant even a century from now. With you cheering us on, we will make that happen…".

Mahindra’s electrification journey: From Reva to BE 6 and XEV 9e

Mahindra commenced its journey towards electrification in 2010 with the acquisition of Reva Electric Car Company, which had introduced India's first electric vehicle, the Reva, in 2001. Subsequently, in 2013, Mahindra launched the e2o, a next-generation iteration of the Reva.

In 2016, the company unveiled the Mahindra eVerito, followed by the introduction of the Mahindra XUV400 in 2022. Despite these models not achieving significant success, Mahindra is making substantial investments in its new electric vehicles, the BE 6 and the XEV 9e.

Launched in November 2024, the Mahindra BE 6 and XEV 9e are built on the company's INGLO platform. With these models and future offerings under the BE and XEV brands, Mahindra aims to expand its presence in the global market.

Both the Mahindra XEV 9e and BE 6 are available with two battery pack options: 59 kWh and 79 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) units. These battery packs support DC fast charging at rates of up to 175 kW, enabling a charge from 20 percent to 80 percent in approximately 20 minutes.

Mahindra asserts that the BE 6 can achieve a range of up to 535 km with the 59 kWh battery pack, while the 79 kWh variant is expected to provide a range of 682 km. In comparison, the XEV 9e is reported to offer a range of 542 km with the 59 kWh battery and 656 km with the 79 kWh battery pack.
